Field Music - "It's A Good Thing" Breakdown
Somewhat under represented in the world of music, Field Music are an excellent band from Sunderland UK, creatively synthesising and interpreting the sounds of 1980s pop music in their own unique way. In this video I delve into Field Music's song "It's A Good Thing" from their 2016 album "Commontime" in which I present an analysis of the chords, melodies and outro string section.

Frank Zappa Conductor Score and Musical Problems

A look at the conductor score for Frank Zappa's "Bob in Dacron and Sad Jane" and some of the perceived musical problems. NOTE: At 01:32 in this video, I discuss 2 bars consisting of 11/16 and 15/16 and how these could be interpreted as substitutions for 11:4 and 15:4. Just to clarify, although these 2 bars could be interpreted as substitutions for facilitating the "economy of means", they do no...

I remember critics saying his music wasn't "real" because synthesizers were artificial. Come on, guitars and pianos don't grow on trees. When you get right down to it, aside from the human voice, ALL instruments are artificial contrivances. As are the scales of notes and selection of rhythms. If it weren't for these "creations" there would be no music.

Without Frank Zappa Steve Vai would not be the guitarist that he is to day. I mean you listen to Moggio, Sinister Footwear, Stevie's spanking , alien orifice and what's new in Baltimore Family new songs that featured Steve incredible soloing prowess..... in Zappa pointed him in a direction that clearly benefited every part of his career. Even soloing! I mean you can just hear Frank's influence all over flexible!! Frank was an absolute Master on the guitar sadly underrated I don't get it I mean in my mind I think he's the greatest guitarist that ever lived but people would certainly contest that I'm sure but I don't care it's a personal opinion in years of listening to Frank Zappa's bootlegs in his live guitar playing you get a sense of how remarkable he is . I mean you just listen to The torture never stops or conehead solos from 1977 at the Palladium any one of the shows/6 shows in three nights. Any of his solos from 78 or 79 a ridiculous with either Bozzio or Vinny is the walrus Coliuta on drums. Patrick O'Hearn and Arthur Barrow on the bass. Total ridiculousness. Frank had a certain feel to his playing that I just have never heard in any other guitarist and it's never the same thing twice. but anyway Steve is a monster because of the experience he's had with Zappa. Steve will still tell you that some of the toughest things he's ever had to play on guitar was from his FZ campaign. absolutely brutal songs that tested Steve every night & you better be Flawless if you're going to play in a band for Frank.

it happened that when i was at the maximum of my zappa worship for his sound and playing i got a blast when hearing vais guitar stuff with the zappa band. i thought fz is guitar god and i was shattered when i figured out its vai not zappa playin that stuff. its like figuring out that there is no santa as a kid :D total disappointment. i hated vai for that for a good while. i bought his book with the fz solo transcriptions and then i became aware of him.

Cool stuff! It was interesting to get a glimpse of what it was like for the musicians. Just to play those parts requires talent and practice, but the shows had all sort of monkeying around happening so it was not just playing the right part preferably at the right time. Ridiculous.

My cousin lived down the road from Steve Vai. It was about 1975 or 76 and he said: Steve Vai! Remember that name. He’s going to be famous one day. I chuckled and said ok. Then I heard Zappa’s Ship arriving too late to save a burning witch. And in the credits it read: impossible guitar parts: Steve Vai
